I have a problem with the main bonnet catch on my car as it will not engage when closing the bonnet. The secondary catch holds but this leaves the bonnet not completely closed so I am obviously worried about the bonnet flying up at high speeds.
In the meantime, I have tied the bonnet to the front grille with some rope which I'm hoping should keep me safe if I stick to sensible speeds, but I don't want to take too many risks so obviously want to get this fixed ASAP.
I have tried spraying a load of WD40 all over the mechanism but this has not resolved it. I'm not technically very competent so I am thinking I should see a mechanic to get the whole catch assemby properly cleaned up, but I want to make sure I instruct them to do the right thing - I don't want to waste a load of money and not have this resolved. I'm also worried that the problem might be elsewhere, e.g., something to do with the primary catch release lever itself...? It has always seemed a little loose and without much resistance/feeling/clicking when pulling the lever so is this at all likely?
I've seen the 156 guide here (http://www.alfa156.net/tech/bonnetcatch.pdf
), so may just print this off for the mechanic and ask him to follow this to the letter - what do you think?
The guide suggests cleaning the catch assembly whilst it is attached, might it not be best for it to be removed for thorough cleaning...?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
