Changing a GT 1.9 jtd gear knob

The gear knob in my GT looks rubbish, the '6' is a bodged up '5' and the chrome effect is flaking off

Anyway, I've removed it (it is a simple anti-clockwise twist but needs a bit of force as it's also glued for those who want to know!) but the trouble is no standard replacement will fit as the bit that you pull up to shift into reverse is slightly too wide and gets stuck inside the new gear knob (I've tried several).

Has anyone else tried this and come up with a solution? I can't grind a bigger hole in the gear knob as it's already very thin around the opening so my only option seems to be to sand down the gear stick slightly so that it fits, or find a thinner one?

Only alfa would put a crappy plastic chrome effect gear knob in a beautiful £20k+ car
