I need convincing & some belief & some courage...
After 12 years driving BMW's (all trouble free) i went for a spin in 2005 GT today. It was very much different, ride was hard, had trouble with the gears, 3rd was a bugger to find, it was very dark in the cabin but what a beautiful looking car. It's 2.0 JTS lusso in red with black leather. done 84,000RM with a fully stamped book. All serviced up (or will be if i buy) and the cam belt belt has just been done for the 2nd time. Only weird thing i noticed was that the bonnet catch was a bit furred up. Like an old kettle. Looks like the rad might have blown or there's been some sort of water leak. Anyway, the rad looked new. do these cars tend to blow their waterworks? The nearside small indicator was hanging out (easy) but the boot lid/hatch didn't rattle. in fact i heard nothing weird. Apart from the brake servo working when i braked but it wasn't an alarming noise. I just figure this is one of those Alfa quirks i've heard about.
I mentioned the 3rd gear problem to the dealer and he said he knew about it. It needs a new bush or something. I spoke to a mate of mine who owned a GT a couple of years back and he said he lost 3rd on his altogether and needed a new gearbox!
I only do about 4000 miles a year so don't need a top notch motor however i don't want to be forever in a garage and pushing my credit cards into PQM's. I have a vinyl record addiction to fund. So do i risk going for it or just play it safe and say they're not for me. I only want it cause it's so pretty. But pretty means trouble doesn't it? I've been scouring forums tonight and read some horror stories but then again, people still love them and they say if you look after them, they'll be ok. what do you reckon, shall i go for it?
