147 e.c.u and key????

I bought a 2001 alfa-romeo 147 1.6l 16v which had a fault were it just stopped and wouldn't start, until you left it to cool down...
A mechanic i know said it could cure it for me... After a few days he told me the front windscreen was letting water into the e.c.u and it would need replaced, so i got the screen resealed and he supposetly replaced the e.c.u with one from another 147 and reprogammed the key....
When i went to collect the car, i took my spare key, which he had no access to, and open the car with it and i was also able to start the car with the spare...which leads me to believe he never changed or reprogrammed anything.. how could the new brain recoginise my spare which was never tuned in? so to speak
Am i wrong?

ECU is under the bonnet !
Body computer maybe ?
Sounds more like a crank sensor issue tbh

Did he try and charge you?

It is definitely the crank sensor though.

Ok,lets clarify a couple of things.
Yes it sounds as if your cutting out /not restarting problem was a crank sensor.
But you can fit a body computer which retains the original coding, problem is most "normal" garages havent got the know how/equipment to do that.
Also when for example you fit a NEW body computer or ecu, they are programmed to the cars existing codes.

it seemed to be the body computer he changed twice... i thought i had the boots taken off me, only problem left is a bad earth causing the altanator not to charge the battery properly, its been a working progess, but i like a challenge... thanx for the insight, i just wanted to make sure i wasnt being hoodwinked...
