strangled CAT symptoms.....

Guys, this is gonna get a lot of snide remarks, Im sure:
Is their any general symptoms that afflict an ailing CAT convertor?
I have a feeling that mine nay be coked up... no rattling or funny smells
but a feeling of lethargy in the low end and a hissing sound from down below when acclerating.. pls dont laugh , (No pun intended) ,
The joints between flanges are tight and the flexible hose is new.

Re: strangled CAT symptoms.....

Well, you would have to look for a tell-tale sign as to why it could be choked as it's not easy to diagnose a blocked CAT with it in place...
Does the car smoke on gear-change or when pushed at high rev's? If so, a build-up of oils may be present in the unit and could cause that. More likely you would see loss of willingness to rev high when the most air is going through the system.

Best to remove it and check by eye. You need to look down the side facing the front, you should see the matrix and it should look clear in all ways.

Re: strangled CAT symptoms.....

actually its a willingless to rev on full throttle, ie foot to the floor vs half throttle seems to produce same results.
Perhaps its a knackered o2 sensor that i read abt rtaher than the CAT per se.
