M.P.G. 'inaccuracy'

Just done a 400 plus mile journey in my 156JTS. Now I've always suspected the onboard info system for fuel recording etc. was pessimistic, anyway on returning info panel tells me I'd averaged 20.6 m.p.g. for the trip, but having brimmmed the car before leaving then re-filling when I got back it appears I actually achieved 31.8!!!!! Now I'm not complaining, infact I'm very pleased considering the fact we didn't exactly hang about, but why such a disparity?

I can't give you a valid explanation, only that it would appear to be a very common issue with Alfa's - Petrol and deisels alike. On a recent trip where I got stuck in straffic for ages on the A14, the MPG on my car was steadily rising to the dizzy heights of 86mpg - Impressive considering I wasn't even moving!

The only two MPG calculators I found to work were one in a Lexus is200 and our MiTo!

I always fill to the brim and calculate it that way (isn't one on the 156!)

I have indeed happily ignored/will continue to happily ignore it fishy-steve. I was just curious if there was some simple explaination as to the inaccuracy or whether it is the same for all, or a 'uniquely' wrong in my case, seems it's 'normal' though so that's fine.
