Clutch Vibration/Noise

I have a 156, 1.8. Since last week, there has been a loud vibration noise coming from the engine. Ominous.

Narrowed down the sound to be the right side of the engine - near the clutch. It doesnt make a difference as to whether I press the clutch or not. It sounds like there is a bit of metal in with the clutch - a bit of metal in a blender sort of noise.

Engine performs the same, clutch pedal is the same. No recent maintenance that could have affected it.

It happens in various degrees - really loud, loud and not at all. Generally, start the car - really loud. Turn it off, turn back on, then its either loud or not at all.

(Note: This would be made easier if my car was starting properly. Seems like there isnt fuel in with the sparkies. Other posts seem to point to crank sensor. Agreed?)

So I don't think it is the engine, nor the gearbox - so must be clutch? Advice, repairs, cost?

Thanks all - Ben

Remove the small rectangular black rubber bung from the top of the gearbox housing and spray some white grease in the direction of the clutch release bearing to see if the noise alters or goes away. Also check the gearbox oil level to help find the problem.Another thing to consider is to try to move the crankshaft pulley wheel in and out to see if there is any movement.
