Turbos, dont be scared of em!
i assemble turbos for a living, and people seem scared of them and allways expect them to go bang.
i hope by typing this up it will maybe put some minds at ease!
the most important thing is to change your oil and filter regular, as thick gloopy oil cannot get through oilways and keep the journal bearings lubed, they are machined to run with an oil coating, this oil takes up the the free play and without it the rotating shaft will soon wear the journal bearings, overheat and snap the shaft.
they are a relativly simple thing really with exhaust gas driving one side compressing air for the other......with the oil lubing the center, turbine end (exhaust) is iron, comp end is ally, these bits rarely fail.
driving very hard then turning engine off isnt wise either as a red hot turbo can evaporate oil and coke up the surfaces, remember with engine off oil does not circulate to lube, and cool the turbo.
so look after your oil and itll look after your turbo
oh an after thought to cost of them........its down to the precision of the engineering that goes into them......the parts are made to incredible tollerances, well ours are down to 100th's of millimeters and a refurbed one should be as good as new !
