If you're not worried about fuel then go for it as the V6 Busso is a fantastic engine to own (the car it comes wrapped in is a bonus)!
I have a 2.5 V6 in my 166 and the economy really is as shocking as the figures suggest. I do mainly short journeys and my computer struggles to break into the early 20s for mpg. Typically filling the car up with about £74 worth of fuel I'm lucky to get around 270 miles to a tank. The best I had on a long run has been 32mpg (200 mile journey with computer reset). Out of interest though the 2.0 T Spark 147 we have isn't as economical as you'd think either so if you can afford the extra road tax you're just as well getting the V6.
There was a good GT buying guide in AutoItalia a couple of months ago which if you haven't read you should try and buy the back issue as it was quite informative. They seemed to rate the later diesel engines in it quite highly but you may make a significant saving by plumping for a V6 over the diesel which would pay for your fuel over the course of the year.
Good luck whatever one you decide to go for though. Oh, and make sure any belt change done has had the metal impellor water pump as it'll be a £250 labour job on average to fit a new one plus the price of the pump.
