I was under the impression that 10w-60 was recommended in the TS to cut oil consumption.
The thing is, the JTS is a later engine than the TS, so they probably specced it with 10w-60 as a matter of course, especially as so many people were blowing up TS engines due to not checking the oil.
The other issue was the marketing link with Selenia. The fact that their top oil was a 10w-60 IMO is one of the reasons Alfa recommend a 10w-60.
The JTS and TS are pretty much mechanically identical, except for the JTS running a slightly higher compression ratio. I appreciate that this may make the top end of the JTS run a bit hotter, but as long as the engines cooling system and oil/water heat exchanger are in good condition it shouldn't make that much difference to oil temperatures..
I have always run TS engines on 5W-40 fully synthetic. They sound smoother and quieter than on a 10w-40 semi.
Don't get me wrong, I am not advising people to ignore the handbook, I am just questioning why it says what it does.
