"Major Service Exceeded" message

Just been to look over the Dec 02 156 JTS that I'm planning to buy from a garage tomorrow (17000 miles) and note that the computer screen says something like "major service overdue" when I turn the ignition on, but this goes off after a few seconds.

Is the Alfa now clever enough to advise of servicing based on actual usage or is it just based on miles travelled?
Also, assuming that the paperwork shows that it did have a service at 12 months old or 12000 miles, how do I reset the indicator?

1999 156 1.8TS SP1 (till next week)
2002 156 2.0JTS Turismo (from tomorrow.....)

When was the 12000mile service done?
If it was over 12-months ago then the 24000mile/2-year service is overdue.

Crazed Re: "Major Service Exceeded" message

Thanks. I realise that.

To be really overdue its second service, it either had to have its first 12000 mile service when it was only 5 months old (and has done only a further five thousand miles in the next year) or it had a 12 month service at only 5000 miles and has done a further 12000 miles in the last four months.

Both "real" combinations seem a bit farfetched.

I'll find out when I see the service record tomorrow.....

Anyway, assuming that it isn't really due a service, is there any way for an owner to reset the service indicator?

Re: "Major Service Exceeded" message

It begs a question or two.....

If the service record is up to date but the major service indicator is on, what kind of garage misses such a basic part of the service schedule? What else did they miss?

I would be ringing the service department that issued the last service stamp and asking them about the service. I'd also insist the supplying dealer reset the indicator before any cash changed hands.
