Wiper motor problems on a 156

I had posted in an earlier thread about a problem i was having with my wiper motors. They slowly started to deteriorate over maybe a two year period. Anyway now the motor is knackered and i have had the motor out, oiled, cleaned and refitted and wasn't much better.
So i ordered one in through o'Donoghues in Ballyfermot and it arrived the next day.
Long story short....i tried fitting the new motor whilst it was snowing and when i was finished the wipers were going backwards( i Think). So i thought, hey no probs, i'll just strip it back out and reverse the linkage and bob will be uncle. Not so.... i stripped it out again and refitted after another adjustment. Now the wipers home position is halfway up the windscreen. When i turn the wipers on they wipe downwards half a stroke. Then they travel a full stroke back up the windscreen and finish back at the home position halfway up the windscreen.
I have sat down and thought about this for over 2 weeks at this stage and cannot understand how they operate in this fashion.
Can anyone throw any light on this for me.
I was thinking that maybe they sold me a left handed one.

With the motor connected electrically, but not mechanically, turn the wipers on, then off and allow the motor to return to its normal "Park" position.

Then flick the wipers again and note which direction the motor turns for the "Up" stroke.

Then work out the correct linkage position to match that and connect everything up.

FYI, the same motor (p/n 9948349) is used for both LHD and RHD.
