Help, no power at low revs

Hi all,
I have a 147 JTDm (06 reg ~70K miles) which has been fine until now. Recently though it threw up a MCSF warning on start up and has hesitated a few times when pulling away, particularly after say being sat at lights for a couple of mins. At the weekend however i was parked up for a couple of hours in a multi storey car park, came back to the car which started as usual, i backed half out of the space and the motor died, it would restart but idled at ~600rpm and did not respond to the throttle almost like it neede some choke? So i was going no where as as soon as i began to lift the clutch the engine would stall. After 2-3 repeats of this the motor would not run even at idle merely starting for a couple of seconds then stalling.
I pushed it back into the space (as it happens with the help of a fellow alfa owner thanks to you if you're on here) waited for 5 min and tried again, it started and amazingly after a bit of rough running allowed me to rev it to 3000 odd rpm after which it seemed to run fine apart from a bit of white smoke on tick over and low revs which went after it warmed up.....
I'd just filled it with diesel (not supermarket stuff) and have been running it on the drive for 30 min or so at idle and revving it occasionally every 3 or 4 days over the cold weather to keep a bit of charge in the battery. Would any of this be to blame or is my EGR valve stuck? Which i know can happen at this sort of mileage, it does do or has done mainly motorway miles though.
Any advice greatly apprieciated. (and i am getting the codes read after xmas but forewarned is forearmed as they say)

How old is your battery ? 99% of failures is related to dying or dead batteries in this new iceage !

Don't know for sure about the battery, it's a genuine alfa one so could it be original?
However car turned over fine during the 7-8 attempts i had at starting it so a fair amount of charge to begin with i'd say.....

does SOUND a bit EGR-ish. Hard to say though. Outside chance of a dodgy crank sensor I suppose but they tend to fail at higher temp not lower.
