Re: 156 SW 1.6TS v's 1.9JTD v's 2.4JTD
Strutbrace is definitely worth having. After I fitted mine I was one happy bunny and remain so. It does reduce the tendency to dive under braking and reduces the roll/crash you get to associate with most UK roads.
As Rick says, get the tyres checked. You are likely to see some wear on the inner edge but insist on new tyres if this is excessive. Also ask the garage to get the toe-in set to zero on anything with Veloce/sportpack suspension.
I'd also back Ricks comment to stay away from Lusso or Tourismo spec, their suspension set up just don't seem to be able to handle the additional weight of the diesel engine.
You should find that in a standard 2.4 you get a wallop of power at around 1850rpm through to 2800-3000, easing off as you get to 3500 and all but over at 4,000. Ignore the rev counter for the first few minutes of "letting her go" and rely on your ears. A 5cyl 2.4 gives a similar "vocal" feedback at 3500 to a typical 2.0 petrol at 5500. This way you'll get used to the early change up through the box a lot quicker.
If you find a flat spot just after 2500rpm it may well be the Air Mass Sensor. Insist on getting this checked out and REALLY insist on them covering this item under warranty. Get the garage's assurance in writing if you have to.
Although I've been very happy with the powerchip I've had fitted, I've decided to get rid and have a proper remap done instead. Powerchips simply extend the injector opening which, whilst brilliant above 2200rpm can bog the engine down at lower revs. I'm trying to decide whether to contact AAV, Angel or Monza (unless anyone knows of a reputable outfit in Dorset? Guys?)
Specific to the SW in any trim, make sure that all the blinds, covers and nets in the tonneau cover operate properly and pop the cover out to make sure the end doesn't fly off into the distance, unravelling all the spring tension.
Ignore the left hand rear light cluster cover on the inside of the tailgate, they all come off like that!!!
I think that's it. If I think of anything else I'll post later.
