Finally got the car back from Rusper Alfa last week after the new head was put on. I argued about the extra bill (£500.00) cash, including the cost of a secondhand head supplied by them at £250.00. (They had found a previous head but had to send it back as it had a hole where one of the injectors had worn through) After a while, I paid them as they said that they had already knocked 2 hours labour off the previous bill and I was sick of arguing.
Drove 5 miles and the car went into limp mode -got home eventually and went back there the next day.
Either the turbo fins were not opening due to dirt/coke or the boost switch suspected after a computer diagnosis. They changed the switch for one that they knew had a fault that shows after 70 miles and causes limp mode. Indeed, after 50 miles it happened again and I went back and they put my old one back on.
Strangely the fault didn't show up again and they thought that it must have cleared after the vacuum test and the engine settling down.
So, I drove the car home, had a brief Alfa afternoon, finding little bits of interior trim that needed fixing, admiring my brand new tailgate struts that forced the tailgate up like a rocket, fitting new Alfa wiper blades, cleaning, fettling, admiring and just starting to enjoy being an Alfa owner.
Then the next day, I drove 10 miles in what essentially is now almost a new car. What else could go wrong?
Suddenly the engine loses power, starts bouncing around violently and I stop immediately. White smoke is also visible.
The AA arrive and start the car again. You can hear air escaping from the engine somewhere.
They tell me to drive it home (4 miles) and get Rusper to recover it on Monday. I got 2 miles down the road and the engine seized with a loud grinding noise. Narrowly avoided a multiple pile up as I was entering road works in a 50 MPH limit and the road narrowed to a single lane. Then the AA towed me home.
Looks like Rusper have a lot to answer for. The AA also said to take the car to an independent garage, have the damage assessed and pursue Rusper through the courts.
I seem to have written an essay! My friends no longer know what to say, other than 'I'm sorry to hear!' Thought I'd post on the forum as it's cheaper than therapy! Just thinking how much of my time and effort has gone into this car over the 3 months since I bought it. I'm self employed and if I don't turn up, I don't get paid! I've only driven it around 6 times in the time I've had it.
I'm not sure what to do now. Can Rusper be trusted to fix the problem? I could claim my last 2 bills back from them (head gasket - then replacement head totaling £1500.00) but then I'm left with a worthless car - Or I could take it to SDR Alfa and have a new engine from them?
Then I'll have to sell it. No confidence in it now....
