156 SW 1.9JTD - 5th gear error code

Hi guys,

first post here, so a tiny intro: i'm Jan, from Belgium, and i've just bought an Alfa 156 SW, 2003 model, 1.9JTD 16V 140hp. It's black with cognac interior (which i totally love).

Fantastic car, totally beats any A4 or passat or astra for driving pleasure (not to mention looks )

I have a couple of small issues:

- the keyfob thing...ah well, who cares, just turn the key, it works, no remote...that's fine.

- 50C temp all the time, i just solved it this afternoon by installing new thermostat (50EUR from local auto shop). perfect 90C now, and nice and roasty heating inside quite quickly. (thanks to this forum for the thermostat check method, and the repair thread)

- i get an error code, and the car goes into limp mode (untill i turn off the engine, and restart) whenever i push a little in 5th gear ( hillclimb, or overtaking).

I was thinking MAF sensor right away, but after changing it with a second hand Bosch one (40 EUR), it still does exactly the same. Strangely enough, it does this only in 5th, not in 4th, and not in 6th!

It happens after only a split second on the throttle, i don't need to push for 3 or 4 seconds to make it happen. It happens with these cold temps (0C), but haven't been able to get the error when it was a bit warmer. (+5C let's say)

i hooked the car up to the laptop, and this is what i got:

P0704 transmission/gear sys (5) invalid signal stored
P0238 Boost Pressure (4) signal high stored light on

anybody got any clues out there?

thanks for your attention,
