Clutch or master/slave cylinder?

I'm 99% it's the clutch that has gone on my JTD(154,000mls)symptoms were clutch judder a few weeks ago(thought it was the top engine stabiliser bar as this has started to crack)clutch slipping this last week and now can't get it into gear with the pedal now feeling there's little or no pressure.
But before I fit a new one,how do I check to see if the master/slave cylinder are doing there job?
How much travel should there be at the slave cylinder etc
