Gary - I have a 156 of teh same age and you are better off with uprated pads and discs - especially in winter. The standard alfa ones produce a lot of brake dust and the discs warp way too easily.
In winter, they glaze very easily from road salt and spray, especially if parked up by the side of a busy road, to the extent that they barely work until about 3 / 4 firm applications have been applied - that caused panic i can assure you!
Mine has done 45k since the discs were fitted - they will need replaced next time - and are on their second set of pads. The brakes have never caused any concern since then and for a mainly B road diet in it's 90k, that's not bad!
We have no plan, therefore nothing can go wrong (much)
And i Have finally put piccies of the silver one on!!
