...156 selespeed issues: what are my options?
I am looking for a little bit of advice on how to deal with my car (2001 156 Selespeed) as I have been having some issues and don't know if it is worth spending more money on repairs...
(In Australia btw)
I purchased my first car, a 2001 156 Selespeed Alfa in about April last year for about 10K. When I got it checked out before I bought it, everyone (RACQ etc) told me it was in tip top shape and it worked out perfectly for a couple of months, but unfortunately since then I've paid about 7K in repairs and services in about 18 months.
What happened was that apparently when I bought it the selespeed actuator was leaking into the gearbox, and as such it needed to be changed. The one time I took it to a non Alfa dealer, he put water instead of the selespeed oil...and so not only was oil leaking into the gearbox, but water as well, which has ground the gears down and therefore whenever the gearbox is calibrated..it 'falls out' of calibration in a few days. Also, when I took it to get its 100K service, the guy told me to wait another 20K to get the timing belt changed...and naturally, the timing belt snapped 5K later...
So. The car is sitting on the side of the road with a gearbox that needs replacing and a timing belt that has snapped. Is it worth fixing, considering I bought a new actuator etc and I am pretty sure the valves are all bent etc due to the timing belt snapping, worth wrecking (which would break my heart) or is there someone who would buy something like this?
Sorry for the long winded story, but I am looking for any input =)
