That old chestnut: ABS and VDC errors
After 18 months of trouble-free running, my GT is throwing these common errors.
With daylight outside of working hours now all but a distant memory and time being limited, I would appreciate a little advice to structure my route of attack diagnosing the cause.
The VDC error displayed three or four times over the fortnight leading up to the persistent fail. In all cases, it had gone when the ignition next cycled. This seems to be a quite common symptom. The ABS error was not present at this time.
The error became persistent after ~2hrs of motorway driving last weekend. Both VDC and ABS errors are now persistent.
On one occasion, the odometer (not the OBC) was flashing. This was a regular on/off ~1Hz pulsing of the data display (mileage, tripmeter etc). I have never heard this behaviour mentioned before. I've not seen it since. The OBC functioned fine while this was happening.
From what I have read elsewhere, the most likely culprits are:
Brake pedal switch
Steering angle sensor
Poor electrical connection (fuses etc)
Is there anything I have missed that I should add to this list?
Does the fact that the VDC failure occurred before the ABS aid diagnosis? I'm considering that a faulty brake pedal switch or steering angle sensor would probably knock both out at the same time.
What about low voltage at the brake distribution unit (as suggested by fuses, battery etc) -surely this is dead easy to measure given the pinout? Anyone with info here, I'd be very grateful.
If I can't track the fault down manually, I will invest in a cable and use Alfadiag or FiatECUscan. However, I'm pretty hard up at the moment and the money would be better spent on tyres and ARB's: does anyone have info on making a cable and interfacing myself?
Thanks in advance,
