Brake pads/disks/clutch quote ripoff?

Hi guys,

I took my Alfa into the Agents today for a annual service and brake pad change.

I received a quote as follows for other work they felt needed to be done:

FRONT BRAKE PADS R 1,398.00 1 R 1,398.00
FRONT DISCS R 1,143.59 2 R 2,287.18
LABOUR R 495.00 1.5 R 742.50
FRONT WIPER BLADES R 310.74 1 R 310.74
LABOUR R 495.00 0.2 R 99.00
CLUTCH KIT R 3,378.50 1 R 3,378.50
LABOUR R 495.00 6.5 R 3,217.50
SPLASHTRAY R 1,121.82 1 R 1,121.82

What do you guys think? I am going to take the disks to be skimmed somewhere else(my car has only done 70000km!) and get brakes put in as well.As for the clutch -well i guess ill just wait until it get worse! Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks

Using currency converter those prices appear to be what I'd expect from a UK dealer, pads 35, discs 102ea, clutch 300, labour 40 per hour (this ain't bad at all)

If the discs/pads need doing and you don't have the time/tools/ability to do it yourself those prices aren't too bad at all.....for a dealer. The clutch is an expense you need to decide for yourself, do you think it needs changing?

If the spashtray is the engine undertray then 100 is what I'd expect from a UK dealer.

So, no, if this is an Alfa dealer I don't think these are rip-off prices, they're quoting 420 (inc labour) to replace the clutch, I'd be surpised if a UK dealer could do it for that. I'd expect less at an independent, but you may not have that luxury in South Africa.

All the best

John, for probably less money you can get the Powerbrake disc and pads set and they an improvement on the standard kit. Well worth the money and very easy to do yourself. If you not sure on doing it yourself, ask in the SA section and I'm sure for a couple of beers some of the chaps could even help you.

The clutch I'm not sure on, but there are a couple of great independant Alfa specialists that could be a little cheaper. Maybe sorce the parts from AK components, they might be a little cheaper.

Hope this helps.

MasonGTA and pubsinger - Thanks!!

I took the normal service - oil filter, oil change and bought the splash tray.

Have decided to go to a brake and clutch place to get the disks skimmed and the brakes replaced.

On that note - do you guys know which pads to get for the alfa gt 3.2?

Before i took it to alfa i went to a number of Spares Shops and they didnt have any stock...

Are there any other cars that use the exact same brrake pads as the alfa GT that i could use as an example when enquiring!?

Thanks again!
