arbor press

hi guys,

did'nt know where to post this but basically I want to buy a press of some description so I can change all the bushes on the suspension of my 147. I have been told I should buy a 10 tonne press but I don't think I need to. Why do I need such pressing power when the car itself has a total weight of around 1,400 kilo's? (Plus their 250 quid a pop). So any advice would be helpful

thanks everyone!

I dont think the size of press required is directly linked to the weight of the car, it's more about the force needed to remove/fit the bearings, bushes etc. I reckon a 2 or 3 tonne press would be sufficient.

Why buy a press, I have always managed to change bushes over the years with either a threaded bar with washers and spacers/sockets to drift them in and out or a similar principle using the jaws of a large bench vise.
Done loads like this on cars and bikes just takes a bit of thinking about.

Same here. I've worked on cars for 35 years and very rarely bothered using a press even though I did own one for years. You can actually damage parts if a press is not used properly. I've seen people crack housings and hubs, bend suspension arms etc. If you put 10 tons on a part something will give. It's not always the bit you want though.
Save your money and apply your brain power to it, there's always a way.
