Could be because when theres less than half a tank in any car, its dont last long as the tank gets smaller at the bottom, so might have quarter showing but wont last very long.

My 147 2.0 goes down very fast once its gets to there.

Other than that check for leaks under the car, smell of petrol ect?

Uphill / camber to left = more fuel - the opposite less

If by 'come back' you mean switch on the ignition and start it without moving that sounds right. Mechanical hysterisis in the system means when you switch on from being parked it will read lower compared to when driving as even some slight fuel movement is enough to make it read higher.

All systems are slightly different but for readings of a quarter-tank or less the gauge will nomally be pessimistic. So its not that unusual for it to read low as you describe it.

If I fill mine until the pump automatically switches off (i.e. full) when I start the car and drive away the guage only ever shows it to be 7/8ths full.

Alfa fuel gauges are useless. Read it when you are driving along on a flat road and have been for 5 mins and ignore all other readings. Reset the trip meter when you put fuel in to help you keep track of how far you have been on a tank.

I nearly accused a servicing garage of stealing a full tank of petrol from me years ago and I'm so glad I didn't. They had obviously parked the car facing downhill or on a left camber. After 5 mins of driving, my petrol 'miraculously' reappeared.

It's one of the many quirks of Alfas. I've grown to love them over the years - it's all part of their character
