'Wurring' Noise 156 JTD 1.9 HELP Please!

Hi All,

I have a rather annoying problem on my 2003 156 1.9 JTD.

The engine makes a wurring sound particularly between 2500-3500 RPM. It sounds almost like an electric motor.

It certainly isn't transmission related as the noise can be heard if the engine is reved in neutral.

I don't think that the turbo is at fault as the noise is very much in line withe the revs of the engine. (i.e. sounds like something that is driven directly from the engine)

I've just had a cam belt and water pump change which made no difference (so the water pump can't be to blame).

I'm thinking it's probably the alternator...

Does anybody have any ideas please?

Any help much appreciated!!

Could be bearings on any of the accessories on the aux drive belt? PAS / ALT / AC ? Or just the idle wheels on there? I suspect you'll need to take the aux belt off to find out???

Easy enough to do, just need access by removing OSF wheel & plastic inner wing. You take off the tension with a 15mm spanner on the tensioner pulley, and slide off the belt (it's trickier than that made it sound, there's a knack to it!). See if there is any play in each one by pulling / rocking them, turning them by hand (obviously with the engine off!!).

I had a collapsed alt bearing on one car...
