Just pulled gaiter and the rubber cover off so I can see the gear lever end. It all seems to be moving as it should.
So took the n/s/f wheel and inner arch shield out and with a willing helper, I can see the gear linkages moving and the external selector arms moving around. What I can't see or hear is if the selectors inside are moving as they should, but the n/s driveshaft just clonks back and forth on the in place 2nd gear cogs.
I can move the lever into every position in the gate (or so in appears), but only the 1st gear position seems to baulk and refuse to select with a "clunk" ..
The white plastic part the gear lever is mounted in is cracked, but not right through and the bushes are all in place so it seems to be working ok ...
The more I look, the more I think it's an internal problem and something has sheered inside leaving the selector arms in 2nd gear position.
But before I fork out for a 'box and spend several hours on my butt on a cold garage floor, just wondered if anyone else had any ideas or thoughts ...
PS Syncro on 2nd has been bad for years .. so I've never been able to change down from 2nd to 1st on the move and to move from 3rd to 2nd involves double-declutching or moving the lever slowly. Anyone think it might be related? The car clocked up 150,000 miles on Thursday and managed a round-trip from home to York, Hull, Willerby and home ... 400+ miles ... without a blip. Go to pick up my son 7 miles away and it breaks!
