p.s. Peformance problem is caused by the egr sticking open, unplugging won't close it but if it does close it won't open again. At least the post facelift models would give a Master Control System Failure (mcsf) error if driven unplugged, not a real problem but the message could mask another. I'd treat this as a get you home rather than a permanent solution
A lot of people recommend blanking off the EGR which obviously is the same as having the valve permanently closed, again not a problem (I'm told) and is something usually done on high perfomance engines. Doing this would also give the mscf error however.
Cleaning the egr has lasted me 18 months so far and I'll be checking it when time and weather allow. More and more I think the real solution is a remap which just never opens the valve and suppresses the error message bypassing all possible problems
