Guys please help this is the chronology of my problems in the last 6 months, my 147 is now on 230000km. *Am not a mechanic so my terminology might not be 100%*
1: Clutch gave up, changed no more problems.
2: Water pipes, reserve tank/radiator and radiator/engine both gave up following each other, replaced both.
3: Lost power and car started smoking. Piston Rings/Seals + 2 Pistons replaced. Car was ok for 1 week.
4: Lost power, Knocking sound from engine and smoke. Oil pump and crankshaft replaced. Car was ok for 2 weeks.
5: Advised to change exhaust system after doing number 4 of which I did.
6: After no 4, returned the car since car was not performing better, mechanic blames engineer for providing wrong pistons during work for no 4, so pistons refitted.
7: During 6 was advised to change MAF to improve perfomance as it was apparently faulty, of which I did install a new MAF.
8: Car fails to start 2 weeks after no 7, I suspect battery. Took it to battery place. 1 Year old battery apparently dead. So got a new battery.
9: 3 weeks after no 8, car misfires. Take it in. Changed all Spark plugs and advised of possible problems with throutle body but nothing to worry about, apparently minor.
10: 2 days after number 9, the car chokes on take off but performs OK on freeway (with occasional chocking), but won't go above 120km/h.
Am now completely lost as to what could possibly be wrong any ideas?? Please help??
Work 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 done by same mechanic.
11: Drove around for about 4 weeks since point number 10 above and the car started "mis-firing" / Shuddering. Took it back to second mechanic on point 9. He tells me that he 'cleared errors off the computer' but there is a knocking sound from the engine. So I took it back to the first mechanic.
12: After about a 1.5weeks the first mechanic admits that he is not sure whats wrong with the car. He says the oil is only being 'pumped' to one side (even though pressure is right) of the engine and not the other thus resulting in the crankshaft being damaged on the one side. After a couple of days of his explanation the car was back and no explanation as to how he fixed it.
13: Car drove ok for first couple of days, then started smelling a light hint of exhaust fumes. She then has started drinking oil. But the surprising part of this, though she is drinking oil and the exhaust fumes, the drive quality has been the best since the whole thing started. But of recent I have started noticing a bit a of sluggishness.
I am totally lost now at what to do, and have lots of questions.
- Since the car is giving same symptoms as when the mechanic replaced piston rings/seals (point 3 above), was that really the problem the first time around or he just started breaking everything then?
- When he replaced the crankshaft (point 4) did he bother to check what had caused the first crankshaft issues or did he just replace without checking as now he has had to replace the crankshaft again (point 12)?
- Do I return the car to him or do I try and find another mechanic at additional costs as his last 2 jobs I told him i would not pay for since it's basically all his failures. So is he intentionally doing a crappy job?
- What could be wrong with this damned car???
Would appreciate any kind of feedback or your guys thoughts, thanks.
