I have a 156 2.4 JTD Sportwagon, two years old. Last year I noticed that it had worn out the front tyres on the inside edges, which is a common problem with this model (and the V6) I believe.
Anyway, I had the alignment adjusted and bought some new tyres. Now, the same uneven tyre wear is becoming aparent again, although not so bad just yet.
Tried to get the alignment adjusted again at some high-street tyre place (ATS I think) but they told me that this can only be done by an Alfa dealer now and they (ATS) have been told not to do it anymore as it messes up the whole geometry of the front end.
Can anybody advise what the situation really is, I suspect that an Alfa dealer would only take it to a high-street place to get it done anyway. Is it really necessary to go to Alfa ? What is it that's the problem with these cars, did I hear somewhere that the optimal setting is toe-out, hence the tyre wear, but that it should be set as neutral to preserve the tyres ?
I'm sure this is a subject that's been debated over and over, but I'd be gretful for a summary of the causes of the problem and what to do about it.
Many thanks all
