The dreaded ABS/VDC failure
I did a long trip in my GT. Ended up hitting some monstrous potholes which required a new undertray and had my front bumper re-painted. Insurance job. After hitting these potholes the ABS/VDC light comes on intermittently. Sometimes when I start up and sometimes when I'm just cruising along. If I switch it off it starts ok. It can go for days without re-appearing.
I put it in as part of the insurance claim. The panel-beaters got an auto electrician in and he gave them a technical report. According to the examiner it shows that the stop-light switch is not working but that can't be the case he says. Then he told me that it shows the rear brakes coming on and the the front brakes coming on and off when the warning lights come on.
He feels that it would have something to do with hitting the pot-holes but he wouldn't show it on his report. The insurance company says they will pay out if he writes what he has said to me. (That he feels it's related to the big bumps). The insurance company reckons it's the VCU unit, (which they call a modulator for some reason???) and its price is around $3500AU. They also reckon it could have failed because of heat and the unit is too close to the engine. I don't know where they dreamed that one up.
I think they're talking through their ar*e and are grasping at straws so they don't have to pay.
Could it just be a loose wire or something like that? Dust or dirt somewhere? Nothing wrong with the battery.
I feel that it's too much of a coincidence happening straight after banging into the potholes. I'm not just letting this go.
Any suggestions or feelings what could cause this? I need to fix it but changing the VCU seems a bit drastic. (And expensive).
