Sorry Malc 156, I seem to have crashed your exchange with Smaky. He's got us joined together as our ???'s are similar, just a different part of the car - you Sele, me dipsticks.
Smaky, Nic the AR tech in Perth Western Australia, a likely lad, saw your 'no improvement' response when I took the 147TS bacK in. He's busy but was really engaged and explained the area on the manifold you mentioned that is sealed from the inlet ports by a gasket and rarely investigated. I'm assured that that gasket was replaced with the full engine set fitted at re-assembly. I mentioned the Mobil Super S 10W40 (Super 2000 here) and after a long discussion about oil characteristics (mollecule chains between fullsyn SELE 10W60 and the semisyn above) I found some 5lt on special at Repco A$25, took it back, and AR put it in with new oil filter at N/c. Selenia A$25 ltr mixed with 1.5ltr of Castrol 10W50 synth 5lt $52.
Well the results are quite outstanding, touch wood! After 360km highway with some brisk 4500rpm empty road motoring on the windy last 100, not a drop used... and quiet. But also it was the diff which has always had a 'period whine' cutting in on the flat at 110 and out at 122. This was diminished so much to be negligible, at all points in the range. But far out... engine oil??? Car's had 15 or 20 end of line re-cals on Alfa diag which always seemed to improve it, but this with engine oil?
This is what I think.... it's a pneumonic! Coming off the unloaded crankshaft and the engine and drive train now with new bearings and clutch... mamma mia its so purry and growly its magical. Drool you lot out there, but, speak-up guys, it's an Alfa!! Don't wanna get ahead of myself now do I.
