Problem is Symon the idlers are not part of the scheduled list of parts for replacement. Of course they should be, and I don't see why dealers or specialists or anyone else simply shouldn't replace them. I mean, it's no big deal is it?
I came to the conclusion a long time ago that 'lateral thinking' i.e. common sense just doesn't come with the territory with most dealers. Same goes for some specialists. Here is an example of one conversation I had with one specialist recently, a specialist 'registered' and highly recommended on here, about the cambelt change on my 156 JTD 16v:
Me: " So does the quote for the cambelt/tensioner/waterpump change include the idle bearing?
The 'specialist': ................(long pause)..........."why would you want to do that?".
Me: " Well isn't it a good idea to change it at the same time as the rest?"
The 'specialist': ..........(increasingly indignant tone of voice)........"Don't think so. We only change them on inspection if there is any sign of wear".
Me: " But doesn't the idler come as part of the cambelt kit?"
The 'specialist':.........(the voice is now getting annoyed)........ " We don't stock the kit".
At that point I gave up, and got the job done at the dealer, who used the full JTD 16v cambelt kit.
