My engine is covered by a layer of dust so thick, you can plant some nice Italian herbs in there.

How do I go about cleaning things up. Not bringing water anywhere near there.

Can I use a high pressure air hose to blow the dust off?

I used Autoglym's Engine cleaner then washed it off with a GENTLE spray from a hose. I protected the obvious electrical connections using silver foil (easier to mold than cling film) and used a brush to work the spray into the oil residues. The result is very impressive, especially as after I sprayed the engine compartment with vinyl cleaner and waited for it to dry. Only use on a COLD engine and don't forget to remove the foil, there are many threads on the subject.

GUNK is brilliant stuff, but you have to be careful with it, it will eat plastics quite quickly if you dont follow the instructions, but it really does remove dirt, grease, oil, anything!

Similar to Gunk, but smells nicer. You brush it on then rinse off with water.

Using small amounts of water to rinse is fine as long as you stay away from the electrics.
