alfa 156 2004 model

i have an alfa 156 recently purchased i dont know much about it i have only owned it a week it has 50,000 miles on the clock loads of service history bills & reciepts i took it for a drive out to wales this weekend whilst on the motorway doing around 70mph a warning light & audible sound demonstrated motor control failure warning light came up the car was previously running fine after short distance the engine started to splutter & misfiring occured i had to drive the car home from motorway at an easy pace the engine is still missfiring & the warning light is still on on the dashboard computor screen i spoke to a few mechanics i havnt had time to look at the car myself yet i susspect it might be the coil pack or the spark plugs anybody any ideas or have any of you experianced the same fault . is this a common fault with this model thanks

It's normally throttle body related on the JTS. Worst case is it's just jumped a tooth on the belt and bent a few valves.
