I've got the fear - 156 and low oil history
A short while ago I bought a late model 156 2.0 JTS for £5k - comparatively high, but it was what I wanted and had a lot of the usually troublesome work already done.
I confess I wasn't as diligent as I could have been when buying, and more foolishly, I've now started to delve deeper and it's got me scared.
On one of the servicing sheets, at 54k miles (it's now at 61k), his cambelt broke and cost him about £3k to have an Alfa dealer fix it. I knew about that but it was fixed - camshaft set, valves, gasket, lots of stuff - so I figured fair enough, it's happened enough on here and people have continued.
What worries me more is there's a major problem listed which says the dipstick was dry and the owner needed to check oil more often. That could be an one off but does suggest treating it badly - from what I've read, the damage would have been done and causes trouble thousands of miles later.
I should say it runs absolutely fine now. The recent MOT identified engine rattle and the last service fitted a crankshaft & bearings, possibly to resolve that, don't know.
How much should I panic for my long term prospects?
