156 Selespeed problem
I have searched the sele threads and tried a few of the proffered solutions to no avail. Its a 2000 156 sportswagen, 95k (kms) on the clock. It is lightly used, here in Holland we bike most places. The unit is used mainly by the missus and was bought explicity for her to use in city mode. 4 years in the states but me off oil stirring torque converters for life. Always wanted an alfa and the selespeed was a deal clincher for herself. Love the beast up till now the most reliable motor we have had. Weird eh?
Two weeks ago we lost 4th gear, no selespeed error light. The garage I use is not an alfa specialist. The local alfa specialists have bad reps for trying to get you to 'concourse rate' the car every time you bring it in for a service. Grand if you have the dosh, but I would rather drive it than polish it. Couldn't get fourth going up or down, in city mode or manual, driving or in MER. The garage tell me the pressures were alright, I can hear the pump working on the door open and in MER I could here the selections clanking along until fourth. Where it sounded like it tried twice then selected 5th. The garage did a recalibration of the selespeed system and that didn't cure it then they schedule me for the gearbox strip down. The day before that 4th came back. Since it was on a longer than usual drive I thought: battery charge. Most outtings are very short hops. I doubt they are longer than 10 minutes. The garage said grand you got it back no worries! Yesterday it got stuck in 1st and wouldn't start. I swapped out the battery which was at 11v. No change. The garage sent a couple of blokes to tow it. Their diagnostics are telling them that the selespeed computer is knackered.
Is that feasible or is dodgey connectors on a 10 year old harness a better bet?
Cheers for any input. Will pop up my results if I get any.
