Advice needed - cambelt snapped
My car is goosed, seen alot of posts on here stating that Cambelts are a common problem on the 147/ low milage Would be grateful for any advice and suggestions of getting some comeback on one or both or the people im dealing with?
On friday my car brokedown (alfa 147 tspark, 54 reg), I was towed to my local garage who later told me that the Cambelt has snapped and could have damaged the engine. They told me they would take the engine apert and report any damages and quote the costs of repairs. Over the weekend I began to question why the Cambelt had not been checked at its service(which was done by the same garage) So i checked my service log book only to find that the garage have not stamped the book for the last two years. Luckily I have bank statement and recipets as proof of purchase. I also have the service report which shows that the garage have not checked the cambelt which it does state to do so in the service handbook. I beleive that the garage have been negligent for these matters as they have not conducted the service with due care and skill. I have put my concerns in writing to them.
I contacted the Garage on Tuesday and raised my concerns with them, to which their response was, 'well you aint getting any free work from me love..' . Since then I have done some research and it seems that this a common problem on this particular model and Alfa actually changed their servicing guidelines in 2006 so that the cambelt should be changed at 36k or 3 yearsrather than 72k or 5 years. However, customers were not contacted and informed of this. I bought the caar from new from the Alfa dealer in Preston. I have contacted them and they have asked me to contact their Uk customer service line, which I have done and am awaiting a response. I also beleive that they are neglegant as the have sold me a veichle which parts are not fit for purpose.
My car has done 36909 miles and is just under 6 years old. It has a full service history (even if book hasnt been stamped) and am conciencious about keeping it in good working order.Had I have been made aware of the need for a change at 3 years I would have ensured it was done.
I have since contacted my local garage who have now stated that they are too busy to do the work and I need to take the car elsewhere.
What do I do?
