I recently replaced the driveshaft on my 156 2.4 jtd but despite searching everywhere I coukldn't find any reference to how to check the oil level in the gearbox so that I could top it back up. Plus of course I found the huge debate over how much oil to actually have - anywhere between 2.4 (for best gearchanging) and 3.2 (presumably for less frequent changes) litres seems to be the case
To further complicate matters it seems that about 200ml stays in the gearbox when you
remove the drainplug (and what a ******* that was on my car, someone had overtightened it to the point only a hacksaw and a hammer would shift it
Anyway, for anyone else who has a similar problem I made a couple of quick tests.
After draining all the oil out (bar the above mentioned residue), I refilled the gearbox with 2 litres of oil.
Using a large screwdriver inserted vertically into the filler hole as a makeshift dipstick, (all tests copyright scientific-methods-rn't-us
) there was about 1.5 cm of oil showing on the end of the screwdriver.
After another 900ml of oil (full for my purpose) there was about 3.5 cm of oil showing.
Hope someone might find this useful.
