Before getting too despondent, try checking the alignment and condition of the shift cables/mechanism, the gearbox oil level, and maybe consider a gearbox oil change. That, at least, would indicate if there was lots of debris in the box or not, which might help diagnosis. If what came out was full of particulate crud, you'd have cause to worry!
The older 5 speed V6 boxes tended to a reluctant 2nd gear when cold, but it was never a sign of impending doom.
Then again, they didn't have plastic tipped selector forks......
I'm about to embark on a 5 to 6 speed conversion on one of my cars but haven't yet got into the 'which oil is best' search, but I don't doubt for a second that there are some good and bad oils out there for this box. (I've got a GTA box to go in, so very similar).
