Timing / Cam Belt Change

Hi All, I'm a new Alfa owner so please excuse me if this has been explained before!

I have a 156 1.8TS and I want to get the timing/cam belt changed. The car is making a noise on start up which makes it sound like a diesel ( lasts for about 10 seconds). I've read on here that it is caused by the variator. Do you recommend replcaing the variator completley?

I've seen a variator repair kit on ebay which is a lot cheaper.

Please let me know.

Replace it completely. New ones are an updated version that (supposedly) cure the wear issue.

There's a thread in the engines section about the success of the repair kits.

Also from Northgate at that price. Includes VAT.

Alfa Romeo Genuine Alfa Romeo Timing Variator - 60666199

The repair kit can be had for a lot less apparently at a dealers. I let an old variator go to someone who was going to attempt a repair but I've not heard anything yet. Anyhow when you consider a new one costs less than 2 tanks of petrol is it worth the hassle?

Probrably not the cheapest but i just had new belts (cam and balance) and pulleys, tensioners inc Water pump
with metal impellors and new variator, supplied and fitted it cost £545-00 at a specialist, includes cam seals
and rocker gasket, just gives an idea of cost....
Worth the cost just for peace of mind...
