Thanks to everyone who offered ideas and advice on my question, "Manual or Q-system auto??"

annddd the answer is.... manual

And thanks to everyone who helped with my decision on what manual 156 to buy....

annddd the answer is.... a 2002 GTA

The Alfa specialist checked it over today and said if he had the $ he'd buy it himself... Only problem was a few dints in the drivers door from bumping it on another vehicle, and leaky rocker gaskets, which he said aren't bad enough to be urgent.

Called the owner and did the deal this afternoon... So once the cash is paid I will be the proud owner of a Grigio Metallica GTA. It was $10-20k under what others are being advertised for atm. lot better deal than that TS.

I was bowled over by the Service invoices I got copies of. The dealer service people charged massive prices for parts and did the owner no favours... ie they didn't replace the water pump either time the cambelt was replaced, and then of course it disintegrated, the car overheated and had to be brought in for just the pump, for which they charged a packet.

Got a Q2 and perhaps Koni's on the shopping list. And have some recommended locals as well as a young mechanic friend of my sons who can help out with non specialist repairs, and a friendly official service agent I've already got to know, so hopefully I won't get taken to the cleaners with it.

Thanks again!

I am sure I will be back with more questions, and will try to get some pics when I've driven it back from Sydney and ferried it across Bass Strait to Tassie! Maybe some shots of the trip as well

Thanks again for all your advice; Here is bit more detail in how I ended up with the GTA.

After lots of searching and helpful advice, including the recommendation from the seller of a pristine '05 156 auto I was really interested in (who owns a GTA) that I'd be better off buying a GTA... I ended up focusing on the GTA in Sydney.

It was a great price, lower end of RedBook valuation, though it does have just over 140,000km on the clock (normal for age). I've kept a close eye on the market, and it compared very well with the price of currently available 2.5 V6 manuals ($9-22k) and other GTA's ($20-35k).***

It is Grigio Metallico (darkish grey with a blueish tint from what I can tell from photos of this one and others). I like the colour a lot better than the black models I have seen and a bit better than red. It was listed originally at around $22k, but I think the higher mileage put people off, but then ironically so did the lower price (15k). People kept asking him what was wrong with it when the others are going for much more...

When I first called he had two others interested, one saying they were coming that day all the way from Melbourne. So it looked like I'd missed out. But he called me back that afternoon to say they couldn't get there, and the other person hadn't called back yet. So I straight away arranged for a recommended Alfa independent inspect it the next day and asked that I have first option on it seeing I was paying out $ for an inspection.

The mechanic reported that all he could find wrong were a few small dints in the driver's door and some minor scuffing (that the owner had already told me about) and a bit of wear on the door side of the drivers seat.

So I then got on the phone and made the deal to buy it. I'd done all my research, and any more delay might have meant missing out.

It has had more spent on it over the last 6 years than what I am buying it for. Just about every wearable item has been replaced.

Now to fix up some insurance. BudgetDirect seems the best at around $450.

I fly up to get it this week and will get to drive it around in NSW for a few days and then the 1300km trip home via the Ferry across Bass Strait.

Every which one

OK. So we own three Alfa's. 2002 2.5 V6 Q4 auto, a seriously worked 2001 2.0l Selespeed and a 2003 2.0 147..

My V6 auto has a full Supersprint exhaust and a custom induction and lowered coil-overs.

The car is as lazy as you can imagine... potters around all day long.. if you want it to go you need to kick it in the guts and then it shrieks into action.. its fast if you kick it.. but most of the time you push the pedal and nothing happens....sure the noise increases, the revs rise but not much happens.. you DO need to get it over 3500rpm and it rarely goes there.. maybe higher compression and a re-chip might solve it..but its definitely not quicker than my modified 2.0l which is far nicer to drive and probably quicker to 120kms.. it's lighter, corners and handles better, more responsive and sucks less petrol.. and more practical in the city. The 2.0l is a drivers car.. the V6 is a comfortable car..

'New' 156 Sportwagon

Hi there,
Story so far. My X Reg 2.0 TS veloce engine went bang last week. Local garage confirmed big ends. Now although everything works and it's been reliable it's not worth much. Upshot is that I've bought a 2.5 q spec distinctive from CG Traders of Brighton. (I bought the first one from them two years ago) Anyway, I am also at a loss to figure out the spec. It drives really well and it's the revised interior. This thread has helped.
I'm thinking of contacting Alfa Lusso Bournmouth to see if they want the dead one. The 'bang' is on the 156 technical.
