I'm new to this forum and wanted to share my Alfa disappointment and seek advice. I moved to Cyprus 5 months ago and bought a 147 as it was the right price, mileage and look. When I started driving it I feel in love. I've only owned VW Golfs until now. Unfortunately the guy I bought it off was moving back to the UK else I'd be having words with him.
Within a week the problems started. I had engine pressure warnings, which appeared to be due to lack of oil, the rear parking sensors have a mind of their own and the dash board looks similar to the one in the Starship Enterprise - lights everywhere warning me about this that and the other.
As the summer started hotting up I thought I'd get the AC recharged as it wasn't very cold (80 Euros). The guy came out and told me the AC was fine but the fan needed attention as it was sticking.
I took it to a garage, being totally incompetent. They charged me 40 Euros for a squirt of WD40 and in the process managed to destroy my electrics. A few days later when I next went to use the car the battery was flat. I gave the garage the benefit of the doubt and assumed it was time for a replacement. I jumped the car and went for a new battery (130 Euros).
Everything was fine for the next three weeks, then it sat still for a week whilst I was away. When I next tried to start it the battery was dead again. So now I'm getting quite upset and plan to take it back to the fan 'fixer'. I brought the truck round and jumped it again, then went for a shower whilst it idled on the drive for 20 mins.
To my horror, when I came out to it there was steam pouring from it and the coolant appeared to be boiling. Now this is where I did something really stupid. Already being late for work, having arranged to meet my partner at the garage who had taken the kids to school and not wanting to have wait for it to cool down and to have to jump it again I thought I could cool it down with a blast down the motorway on the way to the garage.
I got about 10 miles. The power started going and within half a mile the car shuddered to a halt.
The 'fan fixer' wants to take no responsibility and even tried to rip me off again. I had the sense to move it to a guy recommended by the Alfa dealership. Having inspected it he says I need a new engine! I can't really see why but I know all the oil and water had disappeared. It's not seized though as the 'fan fixer' managed to turn it over (although there was no compression). I hope it's just the gasket, although he knows more. Problem is, his English isn't great and I don't know the right questions to ask. Does anyone have any advice or a spare 2.0 petrol engine? He wants 2200Euros just to plonk an insurance right off engine in it and get the thing running! Total cost 3750Euros. Repairs to date + current quote 2450 Euros.
