Hi I would like to make a couple of suggestions and comments / questions:
1/ How much do you like the car?
2/ Do you wish to keep the vehicle and on the road?
3/ How does your finance's affect the desision?
4/ If you decide to have engine swapped - do you get a
SECOND HAND ENGINE
(no guarantee or knowledge of knowing if fault free or if engine has a problem, sorry for shouting that bit but as stated it is a SECOND HAND ENGINE), which you will not know untill your engine has been removed and this one fitted.
Also when engine out you do not know what componemts or ancilleries will come with replacement engine and what differences there will be in components and sensor's/ plugs, have timing belt/s and related componemts been replaced - if not replace them for peice of mind. Does the clutch kit require replace-ing - I would recommend that you do (damn silly not to do whilst it is apart - another big bill again in the future if it becomes a problem).
5/ A fully reconditioned engine is what I would recommend - the main reason is due to, you will have a guarantee and the engine will be basically be like knew and a peice of mind for 12mths (yes timing belt issues should be addressed and still other possible cost eg. clutch kit)
I know this all depends on price and if you can afford it so look at all options before making up your mind....
I have many experiences of carrying out engine swaps (not just on Alfa's but all makes), it all seems so easy and trouble free, beleive me it is not becuase when you have 2 engines that you have to strip because of various reasons to then re-fit components onto the replacement engine before it is fitted to the vehicle it takes time (which equates to £'s in any garage).
