Alfa Romeo 147 notchy gear box

Just bought a bargain Alfa Romeo 147. The gearbox however is very notchy when trying to go into 5th and a little notchy with other gears.

What is the likely problem and what is the fix? The gear stick also has quite a bit of movement on it too.

Replace the gearbox fluid first of all and see how it goes.

The gear linkage bushes are known to wear...plenty of threads on here about loose/stiff ones!

i thought this when i got mine. A collegue who had one from new in 2003 confirmed his was exactly the same, unless you are really struggling to get it in gear then do as Iainfm says.
Never thought i'd say this but - i find a limp wrist type action helps....
