Buying a 156 - advice needed with issues
A trade lot nearby has an '04 156 facelift Sportwagon Turismo 1.9 jtd multijet for sale at £3999 that I'm interested in. I really don't like the sound made by diesels - and this one is much more diesely than a Ford Focus for example - but look forward to the economy.
It's done 84k and has fsh. The body sides have many tiny scratches - like when driving down a country road and scratching in bushes or similar. It looks fine from 5m away. The interior is low rent cloth, but tidy enough.
I noticed a few things on the test drive:
the clutch is heavy (but not as heavy as my GTV) and the take up is near the top - Pressing the clutch by 15mm makes it slip;
One of the back door handles sticks out and doesn't operate the latch;
The heater fan blows on all its settings but little air comes from the ducts. Is there a particle filter or something that could be blocking this;
There were a few rattles from the front suspension driving over quite rough ground. One upper front suspension arm was changed at MOT time in May;
Are the latter three common problems and are there easy solutions? What's a clutch cost, does it require a new flywheel, and is there a solid replacement I could fit from another model?
There's lots of grunt at 2000rpm though it's decaying by 3 1/2k - is that how they are? So it seemed that the best way to make progress is to change gear around 3 1/2 so the revs drop back to 2k and then enjoy the torque. Is this normal for these?
