Alfa 156 1.8 T Spark [gear knob problem]

Ok this much loved car has been around the clock several times.

The gear knob / change has now lost it's springiness / self central sitting but you can still use it, just finding gears can be a problem.

Is it a question of replacing a spring? []

If so is it a straight forward job? I've done a search through the forums and found replacing gear knob topics and they all indicate a nightmare, tapping up the knob, breaking of the plastic housing etc, which I'm hoping I don't need to do.

Sorry if this sounds vague but I don't have the "motor" yet it's a m8's.

He stuffed the AC unit over Christmas by stuffing it into a ditch so I'll be needing to fix that myself also on the cheap, ok, ok ... you can stop laughing now.

Thanks for any help and **** taking

Could be the bushes on top of the 'box or the housing split beneath the stick - easiest to check is the bushes (remove intake, battery & tray to access)

..then bore them out a little, grease up the arm/bushes and rebuild it all.

Cry Like A Baby Picture of gear shaft.

Got the cover off and this is what I found

Putting a screwdriver down on the right side and pushing it hard across tightened the whole thing up with just a little play left in the stick. The bar (1) across looks like it's come away from the plastic housing on the left side and even though it has a split pin it's still moving away. A plastic socket that the metal ball fits into (2) has fallen away and that makes it loose.

So, can I get a spare plastic socket or do I get complete replacement / kit for this?

If I get a kit what cost am I looking at and how easy is it replacing the unit? There is one screw (3) below and two of the same at the top, if I undo these I'm guessing the wires are attached below and I'll have to undo them - is this a pig of a job?

That looks odd. You'll probably have to buy the unit complete. Maybe some of our specialists can help?
