steering rack change on a v6

Seems I need to do a steering rack change on my v6, not had a good look yet but have been told I need to take the engine out to do it, is this right? I have not come across this before.
Second question, are they cost effective to refurbished or shall I get one already done, they are going for 100 pounds exchange.

Cheers Ive

On a TS you need to remove the front subframe to change them. I'd imaging the v6 would be similar, but with the added complication of the 2 sets of downpipes.

Mike2909 has a spare v6 rack (dunno if it's the same as the TS?) If you're interested...

As said, it's a subframe drop - you need to remove the exhaust (and hope the nuts come loose on both of the manifold/downpipe joints) to get the frame down.

Good idea to replace the ARB bushes regardless at this time, and have a look at the bottom wishbones while you're there, as it's much easier to get to all of them.

I say this, having owned an 156 for a month (it being my first Alfa), but I've gleaned this from the forum!
