I have just joined today and puta post in the newbie section.
I am looking to buy a 147 - 52 plate. I believe its a case of if you haven't owned an alfa then you havent lived lol. But I need some good advice about it.
Basically its a 1.6 engine lusso model. it looks rather sweet and has been owned by a mechanic. But its got a well hgih mileage for its age (126 000 miles ) which is a fair amount for a wee engine.
He has had the cambelt done at 93,000 miles and says he has serviced at regularly. MOT advisory said it needs a front link arm for the suspension?? I phoned an alfa garage they reckoned about £250 to fix this (parts and labour)
Do you think this is an ok buy? He is looking for £1000 ono for it. I would offer £850 due to the suspension bit.
Am I a mug for buying it? I dont know much about alfas but like the car. Are their engines good for high mileage?
Cambelt 36k or 3 years whichever comes first. As said the parts might start adding up especially if it needs a variator and waterpump plus spark plugs due every 5 years or 60k and those will be around 50-65 quid for the 8 depending if you can find a deal
Personally I'd get the mechanic to do the arm and buy it with a full mot and factor in costs of belt change
I've been looking at 147's for a while (though the search is now over ) and to be honest, I think if you are patient you can do better. If you can run to about £1200 it will widen your options; for that kind of money, I think that you should be able to find a well sorted example with under 100K on the clock. They do come up.
Lookiung after a 1.6 as it lives and its very reliable , it is a 156 sportwagon (SAME ENGINE BASICALLY)and it has to live , its good on petrol and timing belt is easy , no balance belt also. The link sounds to be a drop link on the ARB SO THATS ONLY 15 POUNDS!.Its also quite a high mileage.
hmm, I think I will pass on this one and keep my eye open for a better car, although it looks nice I suppose I dont really want to be forking out on a car as soon as I buy it. And having 126 000 miles which is pretty high, especially for its age, seems to me like its been worked hard no matter how well its been taken care of.
Not being funny.
But If you get if for 800 run it til it drops! personally I wouldnt spend £500 or even a penny if you can get away with it! on a service for a car worth £800. Id just gamble that it would last another year or 2 and save the 500 for the next car.
I sold an my old 146 with a dodgy clutch, blown exhaust, no mot and 2 dodgy tyres, 100k for £375 earlier this year. Basically I ran it to the ground, surly a 147 will still be worth sometihng 2 someone even if something bad goes?
Dont spend a penny on it is my advice and let it be hopefully a good introduction to the world of Alfas!
You have a point there, but I would need to spend ay least £300 right away to do the timing belt (just to be on the safe side) other wise I wouldnt have a car at all. One will pop up I'll just keep my eyes peeled
