I was in similar position a couple of months ago, but was looking for an early facelift. Although I knew about the potential oil consumption, I became wary of whether a car with >1 previous owner might have been run low on oil at some point. I very nearly viewed a car that sounded ideal on the phone until the (very honest) owner said 'I discovered it used a bit of oil when the oil light came on under braking...'. My advice would be to go on the carefulness/knowledgeability of the current owner and the car's history.
In the end I found a 5-yr old,, 60k mile, 1-owner car at a main dealer, supplied and serviced by that dealer from new, previously owned by alfa-enthusiast mature owner apparently (allegedly!). I've not normally bought from main dealers, but was persuaded by the 1-yr Alfacare+ warranty and generous trade-in on my old banger. Price was 7k, but they gave me near-retail rather than trade-price on the old banger (1.2k). Really pleased with the 147, my first Alfa, it's been near-perfect in the 4k miles I've done so far.
