Gearstick loose and can't select some gears

Just went out in the alfa this morning - got about 1 mile down the road and the car refuses to select second - instead it goes into 4th!

Additionally, the gear stick has a loose feel to it and not positive - feels like I could move it anywhere I wanted to.

Does anyone know what could be the problem? I've run my local Indy - who isn't open today, left a message - hopefully I can get it in first thing Monday.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Alfa 156

I'd run a few searches on gearbox in the forum, quite a bit of info. I posted today with a stiff gear selector problem and the two simplest causes of selector issues seem to be a cracked housing for the pin that controls left and right at the base of the gearstick or more commonly a stiff pivot pin at the box itself. I'm a newbie on here for help so listen with caution. Search my post '156 gearbox feels heavy' to see advice I got.

It's the small plastic cup which holds in the stick, a cheap part (I have loads of them) and not too dificult to replace.
