Following the great advice from this forum, before buying my 147 less than 2 years (and about 9K) ago, I made sure the dealer did a cam belt change and also changed the variator. They said they did both....
After driving a fair few miles over the weekend, I started the car this morning, and it sounded like a misfire. It was running really lumpy, and popping the bonnet open, the whole engine was rocking on its mounts.
After less than a minute, it settled down. If I restarted it, while the engine was warm, it behaved fine. However, if it cooled down, it would do exactly the same.
Having read other posts, I believe it needs a new variator, however, most users seem to reference "sounds like a diesel" (which it does) but no-one mentions the vibration / misfire side.
1) Does this sound like the variator?
2) What does the variator do?
3) Would you expect the variator to fail after 20 months and under 9,000 miles, or have I been conned by the dealer?
Thanks, in advance
